Buying Stories: All-New Tales

Stories is an anthology of fiction - but that is where the similarity of the stories contained in this book end. Some ring more of fantasy, some lean towards straight fiction, and a few defy easy categorization.

Put together by Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio, the main goal of both men was not to have a specific genre in mind, but instead to look for really good stories. Stories that feed the mind and leave the reader wanting more. Stories that could take us back to the way reading felt when we were children - magical, and full of mystery and wonder.

In large part, this book succeeds in its task. I read every story in here and thoroughly enjoyed most of them. Those that I may not have found as exciting were not from lack of talent on the part of the story - I am convinced it simply came down to personal taste and preference. And while I tend to be a fairly speedy reader, it took me quite a while to get through the book - I found myself putting it down fairly often, so that I could ponder the story I had just finished. Sometimes to better understand, sometimes to decide whether it was something I enjoyed...but more often, just so I could enjoy the feeling of excitement and joy from reading an excellent piece of writing.

I highly recommend this book for fans of any form of fiction - there really is something in here for everyone. This is one of the rare books that has earned space on my bookshelves, rather than a quick and unceremonious exit to my nearest Powell's store. I guess there is one more element of similarity within the stories after all - they all are terrific in their own ways and fairly beg to be read again and again!Get more detail about Stories: All-New Tales.
